ASUS A53U-XE1 15.6-Inch

Best Laptops Under 300The Asus A53U-XE1 is one of the most popular bargain entry level laptops on the market today. Below is a list of basic specs ( read the laptop buying guide mentioned above again if you are still confused):

  • AMD C50 Dual Core Processor
  • AMD Radeon HD 4250 Graphics
  • 3GB of DDR3 1333MHz DRAM, ( slots, 8GB Max)
  • 320GB Hard Drive (5400 RPM)

One of the reasons this laptops is able to offer such a great deal is the it utilizes an AMD processor versus an Intel CPU. Many might argue that there are quality differences, but the bottom line is that if you are looking for a great deal on a laptop (or a PC for that matter) on most cases to save that extra buck AMD is the way to go. The Asus A53U-XE1 packs enough punch to make a solid office PC, student work station or even entry level gaming machine and I would personally recommend this laptop as a win win compared to a lot of other laptops in the same price bracket.

Acer AS5552-7474 15.6-Inch Laptop

The Acer AS5552-7474 is very similar to the A53U except for a few important things to notice . The most obvious being that instead of a Dual Core processor , the AS5552 Acer packs a Quad Core CPU. This makes this machine perfect for CPU intensive applications as well as gaming, but at the cost of battery life and portability. Below are the basic specs:

  • <Bargain Laptops under 400 DollarsAMD Phenom™ II X4 Quad-Core Processor N970 (2.2GHz, 2MB L2 Cache)
  • 15.6” HD Widescreen CineCrystal™ LCD Display
  • Windows® 7 Home Premium
  • Microsoft® Office Starter 2010
  • 4GB DDR3 Dual-Channel Memory
  • 320GB SATA Hard Drive
  • ATI Radeon™ HD 4250 Graphics
  • 8X DVD-SuperMulti Double-Layer Drive

  • Built-in 1.3 Megapixel HD Webcam
  • Multi-Gesture Touchpad
  • Dedicated Numeric Keypad
  • 6-cell Li-ion Battery
  • 5.74 lbs. | 2.6 kg

If you are looking for a beasting laptop to get your gaming on, or you are just sick of your PC running sluggishly with multiple apps on the go, then the AS5552 is for you . It also has an extra gig of RAM bringing the total up to 4GB ( with space for a total of 8GB) which will really make a big difference when getting into apps like Photoshop, doing some serious browser tab spamming, or raging on the new Skyrim. That said, if you are looking to just use your laptop as a workstation you might better off looking for a less beasting alternative. This AS5552-7474 is almost certainly one of the best laptops under $400  available on the market today.

Lenovo ThinkPad SL510 2847CZU 15.6-Inch LED Notebook

While technically this Laptop does retail slightly over 400$, I am including it in this list as sometimes quality is worth paying for. Lenovo offer the best build quality for any laptops in the world and have a large investment value when Best Value Laptopscompared to other bargain laptops as they a built to last and have a great resell value down the line. This particular Lenovo, the Thinkpad SL510 , is perfectly suited as the ultimate workstation or student laptop. It doesn’t have an intensive Graphics card so it’s not well suited to gaming, but as a portable workstation you won’t find anything better in this price bracket.

  • Box Contents – Lenovo ThinkPad SL510 2847-CZU, 6-cell Lithium-ion Battery Pack (up to 4-hours),
  • Intel Core 2 Duo T6670 2.20GHz Processor,AC Adapter; Software Bundle – Windows 7 Professional 64
  • 3MB L2 Cache, 800MHz FSB, Microsoft Office 2010 Preloaded (purchase product key to activate), 1-Year Limited Warranty
  • 2GB PC3-8500 1066MHz DDR3 RAM, 250GB (5400RPM) SATA Hard Drive

Worth mentioning is that as opposed to the two laptops above the ThinkPad offers a Core 2 Duo, which was Intels flagship dual core processor prior to the i5 range , as opposed to an AMD processor. Intel CPU’s , whilst not as cheap, are definitely a step up from AMD in terms of shelf-life and durability ( over the long run that is – eg. 3-5 years plus) again adding to it’s resell value. Lenovo are renowned for their build quality and you’re guaranteed quality components throughout for a truly solid look and feel when compared a lot of other budget laptops that lean towards cheaper plastic alternatives such as laptops under 300 $.

Finding the Right Laptop for Under 300-400 Dollars

November 28, 2012

There’s no better feeling than finding a really solid deal, one that leaves you with a lingering sense of satisfaction. Buying a laptop is no exception. Luckily there are thousands of retailers both online and off who regularly offer discounts for cheap laptops. Looking in the low budget market has it’s disadvantages you will be limited but at the same time for most casual users there are plenty of solid machines that will fulfill your needs if you look hard enough. Sites such as have up to 20-30% on a number of models at any given time. The same can be said for almost any large online retailer or retail store such as Best Buy. Before you can decide on which one of these is best for you though you need to know what you are looking for in the first place.

Casual users have the luxury of not needing as much processing power than anyone with more taxing applications in mind. To run Word and surf the internet only requires very basic specs though be weary of Windows 7 which does require a fair amount of power to run smoothly, particularly for those looking in the second hand market. The ideal CPU in terms of power in the price range would be an i3 or an i5. Next down are the Core Duo and Core 2 Duo processors which are one tier of tech down followed by standard Dual Core and then single core machines. For standard applications like surfing the web and MS Office you don’t really need more than a Single core in reality, though it will still affect the overall speed your PC runs at. RAM is the other important factor related to your PC’s performance. I would recommend no less than 2GB of RAM for any machine in order to get the most out of it. Without enough RAM your PC will become sluggish when running multiple apps at the same time . RAM (random access memory) provides the buffer that will allow your laptop to perform at it’s best. The last important factor is of course hard drive space. 320GB is a good entry level HDD size that will provide enough space for quite a few movies and a ton of music, not to mention a hefty fap folder.

Of course there are still other factors to consider aside from the three above such as build quality, portability and battery life. Depending on important the portability factor is you may want to look at 11″ ultrabooks and notebooks that are built with excellent battery life and portability in mind but the expense of raw performance. For students and anyone looking for a business laptop the specs of most modern budget ultrabooks should be more than sufficient. Just bear in mind that the 11″ screen make’s these not ideal for entertainment and watching movies though the excellent battery life means you can watch movies in some nifty places.

Once you feel familiar with the territory, head on over to Laptop Ninja’s laptop under $300 guide to start browsing.

Dual Core Laptops Under 400 Dollars

November 2, 2011

Dual core refers to the processor technology embedded in the laptop. What exactly is a dual core processor? It is just a technological advancement by Intel that is described by its name. In simple words, Intel CPUs with double processors inside them are called dual core CPUs. It is true that recently Intel has gone far beyond double processors and has introduced multi core technologies to the market but the dual core technology is still not outdated. Even though it is not the best technology in the computer industry it is recommendable to users who require a little faster performance.

You are probably wondering what a double processor inside a CPU would do for you. What it means in simple terms is that a dual core processor could compute a certain task with in half the time it could be computed with a typical “single core” processor. The advantage of this is that the computer will operate faster keeping the time glass away from view. Heavy duty applications will run smoother with vibrant graphics on the display. If you are a graphics editor, animation artist or a design engineer then the dual core laptops should be your low cost options. You should target for dual core laptops under 400 USD and harness the capacity.

Discount Laptops Under 400

October 25, 2011

With today’s economy most are more frugal than ever before. I remember ten years ago it was almost impossible to find discount laptops under 400. Today you can find laptops under 400 that will meet and exceed most consumer expectations. Last month I had a little bit of extra money in my budget and decided it was time to upgrade to something new.

With my budget I was looking at laptops under 400 dollars. I narrowed my search down to three discount laptops under 400. I had to have at least a 15.6 inch monitor, 4GB ram and a 320GB hard drive. The laptops I found with these specs and within my price range are listed below:

  • Toshiba Satellite C655-S5339 – 15.6” Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit Notebook
  • Acer Aspire AS5750Z-4887 – 15.6” Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit Notebook
  • Lenovo G570 (43344QU) – 15.6” Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit Notebook

Get Prices on

While all three have what I’m looking for, there are a few other things to consider when formulating my final decision. One of the most important differences is battery life. The Acer and Lenovo average about 4.5 hours battery life while the Toshiba gets about 5.5 hours on a charge. To me this is a significant advantage for a laptop at this price point. While most specs are almost identical there is one other major difference between the models. The Toshiba also has a 10-key on the side. Although this may not seem significant to many, if you are in the habit of using one it’s a nightmare when no longer there. I end up wasting time when typing because I’m a creature of habit and I find my fingers reaching out for what isn’t there.

My final decision was the Toshiba and I’ve been very happy with it. With the 10-key on the side and the extra battery life when compared to the other models is a great addition to the already wonderful laptop. Be sure to pay attention to the little details when comparing models, because these are the little things that really will stand out throughout your experience!
